Questions-Answers

  • 1. How the participants were selected for the project?

    - We placed the announcement on our web site about the recruitment of the participants, and we were surprised that at the first stage of selection, we had more than 80 patients and at the second stage a few more. In total, we received about 120 applications from drug addicts, who have decided to take this step.

We needed the most serious cases. And we decided that these specific patients fit our criteria. Although, Gleb, a participant from the United States, is a healthy, handsome young man who takes drugs just for 2 years, among all of other patients who have 15-20 years of drug abuse experience, he has the most difficult psychological problems. The reason is that he is young, he still undergoing a self-affirmation process, he still has an unstable psyche, and there are so many temptations around.

The rest of the participants have a heroin addiction. All of them are experienced. A total of 8 people. At first we wanted to run the reality show only with two or three patients, in order not to spend a lot of money. But I still decided that there should be more participants, to form a full group. And it is from 7 to 10 people. Hence the total of 8.

  • 2. What kind of mountain of rocks? What is it for drug addicts?

    - Tashtar-Ata mountain is located in the foothills of Bishkek – it is a sacred symbol of the victory of the World Mind over addiction, steeped in the ancient legends. This place has incredible energetics, people from all over the world come here on pilgrimage, to leave here their pain, to put the past and clear their mind. At the end of the project, the participants of the Doctor Life will make a pilgrimage here, and will weight off their mind by dropping a stone - both in the literal and figurative sense. This will be probably the most emotionally significant moment of our project. In the official brochure of Tashtar-Ata we say: "Russians, Germans, Americans, French and Israelis come here. They come here for their salvation". And it's not just words, such place must be for everyone regardless of the nationality of the patient.

  • 3. What is the point of doing the project for the people who analyze, since such audience consists of only 10%, and rating is important to the show?

    - Our TV show only truly reflects everyday life. The first episodes probably will be scary and hard to watch for sensitive people, but that’s what we wanted. The logic is simple - if at least one person gets scared and refuses to use drugs because he/she saw Doctor Life, then we're doing the right thing. And in order to bring the project closer to the global community, we selected participants from different countries: for example, Victor Malleker is from Germany, Gleb Antonov is from the U.S.. Each episode is translated into seven major world languages: English, French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic and others. Of course, Professor Nazaraliev wanted to show his method, which he developed through twenty-five years.

  • 4. Why a few times in the movie there are cadres with the cameraman?

    -  Cameraman with cameras just jazz up the cadre. In the Scandinavian arthouse movies there are principles of Dogma-95, and such roughness postulated as a rule. Lars von Trier used to film this way and nothing wrong with that. Two things at a time: you see not only what is happening with the participants, but also the process of filming. Squared reality show.

  • 5. Are you planning to film something like this in your clinic in Russia?

    - Maybe there will be a second season. And maybe without stopping, we will just start filming the project for the viewers of Ukraine. If, say, we were approached by Ukrainian Television Company, we would take 5-6 ill people from Ukraine and show them in a reality show. Their compatriots will empathize them perhaps even more. Maybe some of the other former Soviet republics will agree for such cooperation.

  • 6. Ideally, as rules of the genre, patients should be dropped out by the course of action, to fight for the right to stay and all that. But how will you organize all of this, combined with the effective treatment?

    - We do not have a script, because such a reality show is being filmed for the first time. If the "House 2", "Vacation in Mexico" projects have a lot of staged moments, such staged moments will not work with addicts. They are sick people, undergoing the healing process. That is why, I think that today we do not know specifically how it will all end. Most importantly, we want to show people that the addict can and should be treated.

  • 7. After this reality, many narcologists will treat by Nazaraliev’s method, or this method cannot be repeated?

    - Even if we disclose certain parts and stages of treatment, from the one side it is good, let people learn. Learn the basic approaches, such as for example, how to communicate with drug addict. I'm not even talking about the specific medications or specific actions. Just let them learn to communicate with drug addicts. After all, they should be able to understand the addicts, but not in a way as many spiteful critics write about us: that we humiliate, suppress the personality of addicts, spit on them, and almost urinate on them. Generally what they say is very terrible! We have no such practice. We have one of the most democratic clinics. Our door is always open, there are no grids. The patient has the right to leave our clinic at any time and to use drugs, if he wants to. This is a matter of approach. This is the tactic of a school. The method cannot be absolutely copied.

  • 8. I can’t get it, what is so "funny" about this project? Is it life, hey give your money, and perhaps, we will treat you?

    - One of the key objectives of the Doctor Life is to change public attitude to drug addicts. We want everyone to understand that drug addiction is an illness - and sick people are worthy of understanding and sympathy. I’m not interested in empty talks about whether she is being treated or not. If you know, for example, that a man has the last stage of cancer, don’t you think that the doctor would do everything in his power to save him? So do we - we do the best we can. And sometimes we win.

  • 9. Is this reality project really happening in a real time? That is, the participants at this point are in the Center? Or they already left? Are you planning to talk about their fates after the project ends?

    - Currently, all the participants are in the Medical Center, that is to say, that filming of the reality is conducted in parallel with the treatment and a series of projects are coming out with a delay relative to the actual events just a couple of days.

If we will have the second and third seasons, then we will definitely invite one or two members of the first season as a guest. Perhaps, after a year, we will gather all the participants again, and ask them to tell the audience how they live after the project. Someone will have children, families. This is all to be seen. There is no point to concretize right now.

  • 10. How will the project end, because "there are no former drug addicts"?

    - We are working for a long time. Every day and every hour, any unpredictable situation can occur here, that may be interesting to the viewer. But this is not our goal. We're just doing our job. We are doctors. Our main task is to get the ill person out of this debilitating condition. The task of the creative team who is working on this project, is to catch the interesting moments. And there are a lot of interesting things. We have 8-10 more episodes ahead. During this time, the creative teamwork will be able to discover each patient, so that the viewer could worry about and express empathy for each participant individually. Because all the patients are very interesting. They are interesting because each of them has his/her own long addiction story behind. The tolerance of the wives, mothers and other relatives towards the disease of the participants is presented in this reality show. This is a very useful information for the families affected by such disaster and for the society in general. You may ask, how can the addict love his mother? And how can a mother love her drug addict son? They make friends and communicate. Simply, they were able to open up, to show their families, the place where they live. In any way, they live in a society.

In the final series, we will show how we will socialize and integrate them into society. Unfortunately, this is true that heroin can wait, and that there are no former drug users... but we're not saying that we will cure them, we are saying that we will give a remission. Remission may last for a year, two, three, ten, twenty. And even until the end of life. No one can tell for how long exactly. Because yet, the psychiatry did not reach the point when we can change the human brain. This issue is very complex.

  • 11. There are many negative factors that lead to relapse. What will support members when they return home?

    - Only the a strong will and spirit. It is important to understand the past experience of drug use, the negative effects of which were eliminated by treatment. The important role plays the method of mindcrafting: breathing technique and skills of meditation. For those who went through the rehabilitation, it is like a "crutch" to lean on, in order to be sustainable in a rapidly globalizing world.

The Medical Center of Dr. Nazaraliev cannot help the patient in his full reintegration because of the social and mental problems of the society in the post-Soviet states. Institutions that have to work on this issue, do not work due to the financial and sometimes political reasons. Based on this, one of our slogans is: "Help yourself!" Our patients check out from the hospital with this setup.
